On the Fringe

I'm excited for my roommate (and future TVLS columnist)... she is in this year's Philly Fringe Festival. I have to give Cheryl credit for spotting the mullet to the right, and for bringing to my attention the assortment of great play names. Can I get a job naming plays for next year?

I caught the Fringe Festival last year in SF. They have it in many cities around the world. The Fest includes hundreds of edgy, live performances in theater, performance art, puppetry, spoken word, dance, and visual art.

Here is a list of my favorite titles:

  • Fred Anderson -Professional Goofball!
  • Looking, Then Pointing
  • Microclimates: A Crime Against Gravity or The Burrito From Sausalito
  • Upper Canada Cougar Movement, The
  • Way Light Strikes Filled Mason Jars, The
  • Zucchini: The Forbidden Dance!
  • $afe $ex-Get Paid
  • 60-Minute Mental Vacations
  • Agitated Chi, Where Are You Now?
  • Arnold Dinglemeyer
  • Asians Misbehavin' 2002
  • Beans of Kentucky
  • Cell Phones Aren't Punk!
  • Coconut Therapy by Quiara Hudes
  • Don Juan in Hell
  • Fat Men in Skirts
  • Fresh Ears
  • Gayest Link
  • HomoFaux Pas
  • Improvisation in Kimono
  • Morality and Gadgets
  • Oh no! Not me!
  • Philosophising with Hammers
  • My Mother the Drummer, and other Confessions of a Klezmer Family
  • Quaila: God is a Big Fat Chipmunk
  • Santa Claus Is Coming Out
  • SideShow Bennie's Carnival Of Wonders
  • Some Guy Sitting Around in His Underwear Talking for 67 Minutes
  • Spastic Colons & Cocktail Party Chit-Chat
  • The Lamaze School of Singing Presents: "How to Birth a Song!"
  • Who told you that you were naked?
  • The Golden Mullet

PS- My roommate did just buy a new blond wig for a movie she is in, unfortunately, it's not the mullet above.

Bay Area Fun!

www.craigslist.org/best

Personally, I owe a lot to Craig's List:

  • My job at Fatbrain
  • My fabulous roommate & apartment in Potrero Hill in San Francisco
  • Finding a great acting class (they said I was a natural!)
  • A glimmer of hope after 9/11 -- lighting candles with total strangers at Dolores Park
  • Selling my car for way over blue book value in less than 18 hours

I'm so sad that Baltimore doesn't even remotely have anything close to this community! The DC version of the site pales in comparison, so I like to read through the best of CL to still feel happy about my Bay Area connection. Even better was spotting the resume of someone I don't like who is jobless and about to be deported to Canada. Maybe that will be a blessing if she misses the toilet planter in her parent's front yard. Mu-hahhahaaaa

If you aren't from SF, then check out the housing prices and lack of job listings for a good laugh. Then ask me again why I moved back to Baltimore!

MEN WHO LOOK LIKE KENNY ROGERS dot com

I found this site a while ago, and it still cracks me up. I happened to be watching the episode of "ED" with the whole $10 bet involving a Kenny look-alike. Classic. The fun part about this site is, like mullets, you start seeing Kenny Men EVERYWHERE. I also submitted this graphic to the site. Jean Luc Picard as Kenny!

ICE ICE BABY

Last weekend I went to Jillian's Annapolis in Arundel Mills Mall. First of all, Arundel Mills is the hot new mall in Maryland, and it can be described as a Neon Playland... think Vegas. All the parking spots in front of Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World were taken, so we found a spot next to a huge boat. I guess they were going to Bass World, too. We had to park really far away so I walked through several of the "neighborhoods" inside. The best store in the mall I saw was the Evil Barnes & Noble knock-off, Books-A-Million. It looked just like BN but all generic. BN will probably buy them and lay off everyone within weeks.

The main event of the evening was to see VANILLA ICE!

For those of you rolling your eyes, I KNOW YOU LIKE ICE. Secretly, you know you sing along when you hear Ice Ice Baby. Or at least you have watch VH1's Behind the Music. In case you are one of the 10 people who haven't it is on again Aug 29th at 10:30pm. Those 10 people don't include my friend AlanE, who doesn't own a TV. Maybe you are one of the 10 people who have actually seen his debut movie, "Cool as Ice". Yup Yup.

Jillian's has a TIKI BAR in the back where he was performing. A comic speaking entirely in Ebonics opened for him. I don't speak Ebonics and it was really weird to be standing there *hearing English* but not understanding anything. The bar itself had neon paint splashes on the walls that reminded me of the Ratt on campus at UMBC, where I went to school. Finally it was time to see V-ICE (his new name). Through a cloud of smoke and indoor fireworks, he appeared on stage. The ladies in the crowd went wild and some of ugly ones stormed the stage to get topless next to V-Ice, and the guy doing most of the singing, Milli Vanilla. I have to admit, I didn't think I would like the hard-core stuff that he does now, but it wasn't too bad. The drummer was awes, except he was a little scary looking. He would tilt his head to the side and budge his eyes out while he played. I guess he was possessed. Vanilla did play his theme song, Ice Ice Baby!

Rollin' in my 5.0
With my ragtop down so my hair can blow

Now I've done everything I need to do before turning 30 in a few months.
